ORCHESTRA SHEET MUSIC

Welcome to Dantalian's Orchestra Music Page.  Here you will find information about our sheet music editions of Donald Martino's orchestra music: Full Scores, Study Scores, Sheet Music Reductions for Soloist and Piano, as well as Rental Items.
Mr. Martino was raised in the tradition of Italian Opera and clarinet virtuosity.   It is no wonder that lyricism, drama, and virtuosity should play concommitant roles in his compositions  and that he would develop a special affinity for the concerto medium.   There is, of course, the music for orchestra, notably MOSAIC (1967), commissioned by the University of Chicago for the Chicago Symphony, DIVERTISEMENTS for Youth Orchestra and RITORNO (1975, Community Orch), commissioned for the American Bicentennial by the Plainfield Symphony (NJ).  But it is in that medium which portrays man in society that Martino has made his most significant contributions to the literature:

VIOLIN CONCERTO (1996), commissioned for Rolf Schulte, Violinist, and the New Hampshire Symphony by the National Endowment for the Arts: "enthralling...immediately sensuous and dramatically compelling.  There are things that are so beautiful they take your breath away" - The Boston Globe.

SAXOPHONE CONCERTO  (1987), commissioned  for Kenneth Radnofsky, Saxophonist, and the New Hampshire Symphony by the National Endowment for the Arts: "A 23 minute stretch of lyrical, ever-fascinating music...captivating and elegantly wraught.  Scoring is irridescent, imaginative, unusual" - The New Yorker.

PIANO CONCERTO (1965), commissioned for the New Haven Synmphony by the William Inglis Morse Trust for Music: "At the core of this work there is a quality that is at once profound and sweet" - The Boston Globe.

TRIPLE  CONCERTO (1977), commissioned for The Group for Contemporary Music by the New York State Council for the Arts: "What a wonderful time to be a clarinetist, when such a beautiful and significant work can now be in the repertory" - Richard Stoltzman, Clarinetist.

CELLO CONCERTO (1972), premiered in 1979 by Joel Krosnick with the Cincinnati College Conservatory Orchestra: "A full-blown, unapologetic, Romantic concerto, the kind that features large scale exchanges of ideas between soloist and orchestra, broadly varying moods and highly charged colors" - The New York Times

CONCERTINO FOR CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA (2003) premiered by Ian Greitzer with The Boston Modern Orchestra Project in Jordan Hall on Ja. 22, 2005.  Richard Dyer of theBoston Globe called it a "masterpiece."
