JAZZ ENSEMBLE
SHEET MUSIC

Thanks for bopping on down to our Jazz Ensemble Music Page.  Our first issue was The Jazz Invention, CANON BALL, a bright and cheery whisp of virtuosity for Vibraphone and Piano.  Short and sweet, it is a perfect encore piece.  And played in recital it always gets "encore" from the audience.
THREE WAY is for Clarinet (Martino's instrument) or Piano, Vibraphone, and String Bass or Cello.   This three-part invention is more substantial than CANON BALL and less virtuosic.  It proceeds at a lazy swing tempo you'll really enjoy.  In the aggregate the works were intended for an ensemble of Clarinet, Vibraphone, Piano, Bass and Drums.  This music was first played in 1957 by performers in New York, some of whom went on to true Jazz stardom;  but until The Core Ensemble recorded three of the pieces under the title A JAZZ SET, they had not been performed since.
Here are two reviews of recordings and live performances:

"In the mid 1950s he [Martino] invented a pseudonym, Jimmie Vincent, for his jazz playing and composing, a doppelganger that composer Martin Brody, unveiling the 40-year secret in the liner notes, calls Matino's Mr Hyde.  According to Brody, 'The aura of the forbidden is part of the lure of jazz, of its booziness and sexiness, of the daring and risk involved in the act of improvisation.'  The two most enjoyable pieces on this recording are from Martino's jazz period: the perky SET FOR CLARINET, performed here for Marimba and the swingy, lyrical JAZZ SET written in 1957.  A JAZZ SET opens with CANON BALL.  The little song in the middle of the SET, CATHY, is lovely, and the finale THREEWAY produces such a cheery feeling that we wish Martino had remained Jimmie Vincent, at least for a while"- American Record Guide (The Core Ensemble - New World 80518).
