CHORAL SHEET MUSIC

We are so pleased that you have decided to visit Dantalian's Choral Sheet Music Page.  Here you will find information about our editions of the choral compositions of Donald Martino: Full Conductor's Scores, Study Scores, Piano-Vocal Scores, as well as Rental Materials.
Left to his own choosing, Mr. Martino probably would never have written for the chorus.  But three commissions intruded upon his instrumental world producing what may well be his most heartfelt and transcendentally beautiful  compositions to date.  When asked why, Mr. Martino responded: "I think because the passionate religiousity of the texts brought  my own faith more vividly into focus.  Even in the Anglican texts of Herrick, even more so in Dante's 'Commedia,' I found ways to conjure up that fundamental catholic ethic which has always been central to my philosophy of life."

PARADISO CHORUSES, 1974, Pederewsky Fund Commission for Lorna Cooke DeVaron and the New England Conservatory: "Some kind of masterpiece.  How, we ask, can a work of this capaciousness, of its evident complexity and equally evident simplicity, of its variety and inevitability, of its immediate necessariness, not have been there all along, like some new planet, just somehow now swimming into ken?" - Boston Globe At the premiere it provoked a fifteen minute ovation. Now thirty years later it is still waiting for its second performance!

SEVEN PIOUS PIECES: "Martino proceeds with uncommon tact and unobtrusive authority, delicately, crisply but beautifully, with dramatic turns that are somehow very demure and very powerful at the same time.  In retrospect it was the clarity, the terse, ineffable sweetness of the music, that stayed with the listener -- that, and its utter rightness for musical setting of Robert Herrick's metaphysical flights" - Patriot Ledger

Chorus and Orchestra THE WHITE ISLAND, 1985, commissioned by the Boston Symphony for John Oliver and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus: "Serenely beautiful...one of the more expressive choral works of the past decade, and probably the one before it, too" - San Francisco Examiner; "The first new piece heard here in a long time that I would dearly appreciate encountering again" - San Francisco Chronicle; "One of the most unusual and beautiful compositions of the series" - Boston Globe
