ENSEMBLE PIANO SHEET MUSIC

Welcome to Dantalian's Ensemble Piano Sheet Music Page containing information about our publications of Donald Martino's chamber ensemble piano music.  Here you will find a diverse offering, for the piano has figured prominently in the ensemble music of Donald Martino as it has figured prominently in his solo writing.  There is the newest addition to the catalogue, the octet SERENATA CONCERTANTE and one of our oldest sheet music publications:

TRIO for Clarinet,Violin and Piano: "elegantly worked out and purified into a remarkable crystalline beauty... remarkable for its way of linking up the instruments through careful control of color and pitch" - Herald Tribune.  "It is a work of great sensitivity and delicacy, whose rigirous technique is subtly varied by the concentration of each of its seven brief sections on a different kind of relationship.  Its beauty of line and sonority is extraordinary."- The Nation

FROM THE OTHER SIDE for Flute, Cello, Piano and Percussion: "riotously funny.  The jokes are real knee slappers." - Boston Herald.  "The music moved between pop gestures and complex art processes, in one part working a tango rhythm into another meter, and often recalling swing and jazz devices.  It is not frivolous, but seeks an accomodation between the music born in the second Vienna School and the music of dance halls and cabarets.  The final section is titled  'Dr. Schoenberg's Magic Caberet.'   All three elements are there -- Schoenberg, magic and caberet.  The light-hearted pop gestures do not obscure the size and importance of the piece.  It might be called 'the Meaning of Life.'" - The Philadelphia Inquirer

The Pulitzer Prize-winning mixed sextet ensemble NOTTURNO: "The kaleidoscopic range of activity moves from beautiful accompanied lines to overwhelming complexity.   Exquisite and dazzling combinations of instrumental color abound" - American Music.  "Martino's highly organized compositional procedures never dampen his imagination; the piece swarms with color, delicious noises, and eerily magical gestures.   [There are] a barage of night-thoughts to flutter, buzz, and jangle against the window screens of our consciousness.  The second movement begins and ends with those fragile clicks and pops and half-heard sighs heard only in the silent watches of the night."  - The Boston Globe

Finally, there is the CLARINET SONATA, the VIOLIN SONATA No 1, the THREE DANCES, THREE SAD SONGS for viola and piano and the 2003 TRIO for Clarinet, Viola and Piano commissioned by the New York New Music Ensemble and premiered by them on May 3rd, 2003 in Merkin Hall.
